Project Description: This project involved a rural water district in North Idaho that serves the Syringa Heights communities and surrounding areas. After a catastrophic failure of their existing control system, our team was brought in to rebuild the infrastructure. My primary responsibility was establishing reliable communication between two remote CompactLogix PLCs located miles apart with no line‑of‑sight for traditional radio links. To solve this, I deployed a custom MQTT‑based toolchain I had previously developed, using industrial OnLogic FR201 PCs along with the Pylogix and Paho‑MQTT Python libraries, all connected through an EMQX MQTT broker. The resulting system has been operating continuously for nearly two years with approximately 99% uptime—the only interruption caused by a physical disconnection of the local cell tower by the carrier. Under normal conditions, the system exchanges messages every 5–6 seconds, with the capability to reach roughly 1‑second intervals when cellular network traffic is low.
